Health and Safety
As study abroad professionals in the Center for International Study Abroad (CIPA), we consider the health and safety of our students abroad to be of the highest priority. We monitor the political situations in the countries where our students study and receive regular updates from the U. S. Department of State. Study abroad provider agencies and our on-site staff abroad have emergency plans in place for our students, as we have here at home. We are regularly in contact with our on-site program directors and other professionals in the field to insure that our students are always in the safest study environment possible. We have successfully weathered 9/11, the outbreak of the war in Iraq, SARS, and the London bombings.
We understand that safety is an important concern for parents, as well, and we invite you to visit our website frequently for informational updates regarding current events that may be of concern. Should the situation warrant it, we will also send emails to students’ designated emergency contacts to keep them apprised of the situation abroad and CIPA’s response to any such international crisis.
Health insurance
All Emory students are required to carry a primary insurance policy as mandated by Emory University, effective Fall Semester 2006. For all Emory approved study abroad programs, the program cost includes supplemental medical insurance for international travel. This insurance policy is meant to be supplemental to any insurance coverage students normally receive. However, if the current insurance provider does not provide coverage while overseas, then the study abroad insurance provided by Emory will serve as the primary policy. For more information, please visit the Semester Programs section or Summer Programs section.
Cultural Adjustment
Our students continue to study abroad in record numbers because they understand that the support they need from us is always available. We also feel it is important for parents to be aware of the unsettling nature of the first days after arrival overseas and then again during the initial period after return. It is during these potentially “crisis” times that your support is most likely needed.
For more information, please refer to the pre-departure materials given to your son or daughter.
