Resources and Information Events for Students

Students can learn more about upcoming events from the CIPA calendar and from the conference postings in the CIPA Programs Abroad Learnlink Conference.

Study Abroad 101
Study Abroad 101 sessions are informational sessions held throughout the semester that cover the basics of studying abroad through our office. Students learn about program offerings, costs, credits, and more! Contact CIPA at 404-727-2240 or cipa@emory.edu to inquire about session times.

Individual Country-Specific Advising
CIPA Advisors are available to meet with students on an individual basis to discuss their study abroad plans.  CIPA offers over 90 programs worldwide, ranging from direct enrollment programs in overseas universities to Emory faculty-led programs to programs that integrate independent research into the curriculum.  Students are encouraged to contact CIPA or to call 404-727-2240 to schedule an appointment.

Study Abroad Fairs
CIPA hosts a Semester Study Abroad Fair (in September) and Summer Study Abroad Fair (in November) each fall semester. During the fairs held in the DUC Commons, students meet study abroad program directors, relevant faculty, returning students and representatives from various study abroad organizations and universities. Students can pick up application materials, learn about scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and network with students who have recently returned form various locales overseas. Check out the CIPA calendar for upcoming fair times and dates.

Country-Specific Information Sessions
For certain progarms, CIPA offers a country-specific information session at the beginning of each semester. These sessions will be announced on the CIPA calendar, program webpages, and the CIPA Learnlink conference.

CIPA Programs Abroad Learnlink Conference
Announcements about new programs, upcoming speakers, scholarship opportunities, or other “abroad” related events are advertised on the CIPA Programs Abroad Learnlink Conference. All undergraduate students have access to this conference. To add this conference to your desktop, log into Learnlnk and select Public Conferences / University Departments / CIPA Programs Abroad. For questions regarding access to Learnlink at Emory, please click here.

FAME Presentations
CIPA’s presentations to FAME groups are designed to help introduce Emory freshmen to all of the study, service-learning, and research abroad opportunities that CIPA has to offer. These sessions help first-year students plan their abroad experience as part of their four-year plan (see the CIPA Freshmen Brochure for more information). FAME presentations run from late August until early October. FAME advisors are encouraged to contact CIPA or to call 404-727-2240 to set up a FAME presentation.

Classroom Presentations
CIPA Advisors and Peer Advisors give special presentations to academic classes that highlight study abroad programs relevant to the curricuolum or content area of the course. Faculty are encouraged to contact CIPA or to call 404-727-2240 to set up a classroom presentation.

The CIPA Atlas Newsletter
CIPA publishes a semi-annual newsletter, The CIPA Atlas, that features stories of student interest and current happenings in international education.

Scholarships for Study Abroad, Research Abroad and Service-Learning Abroad

CIPA advises students on a range of scholarship opportunities for study abroad, research abroad and service abroad projects. Detailed information on the CIPA Semester Scholarships, the CIPA Summer Scholarships, the Research Abroad Scholarships, the Service Abroad Scholarships and external scholarships will be available mid August 2008.

Pre-Departure Orientation Programs

Semester Pre-Departure Orientation
Students participating in semester or year-long programs are required to participate in a general CIPA pre-departure orientation the semester prior to departure.  The pre-departure orientations occur in November (for Spring study abroad students) and April (for Fall study abroad students). Orientation materials are also posted online for students.

Semester Country-Specific Pre-Departure Orientations
For many semester programs, students are required to participate in additional pre-departure orientations hosted by returned students and/or faculty who conduct research or teach courses relevant to those countries.  These orientations also occur in November and April and are announced to the students upon acceptance.

Summer Pre-Departure Orientation
Each summer study abroad program has a mandatory pre-departure orientation session and/or other pre-departure activities. The Program Director will contact particpants with details. General pre-departure materials are also posted online for students.

International Research, Lab Work, or Service Pre-Departure Orientations Students embarking on research (SIRE), work in international labs (IRES), or community service (UPGRADE) are required to participate in a pre-departure orientation held by respective faculty. The orientations usually occur about one month before the students leave, are individually tailored to their projects, and are nnounced to students individually. CIPA also keeps a registry of students conducting independent projects through academic departments.

Student Visas for Semester Programs
Several countries require students to obtain a visa prior to departure from the United States.  Although there are a few organizations that provide assistance with the visa application process, it is the student's responsibility to apply for his/her own visa. Visa regulations and policies frequently change. CIPA advises students to always consult with the Embassy or Consulate website of the country first to obtain the latest visa procedures. If students need additional assistance after consulting the website, they may contact their CIPA advisor.
